The administrative activities of Rajshahi Division were previously carried out across 16 districts in the northern region of Bangladesh. The divisional headquarters was located at the southernmost point of the division, which made the implementation of activities in the 8 northern districts challenging. As a result, in order to address the overall development of the northern districts, the Rangpur administrative division was established.
In line with the decision made in the NIKAR meeting on January 25, 2010, Rajshahi Division was divided, and on March 9, 2010, the government issued a notification regarding the creation of Rangpur Division, comprising the 8 districts of the greater Rangpur-Dinajpur region (Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Thakurgaon, Kurigram, and Panchagarh).
The divisional administration is committed to establishing the rule of law. To this end, mobile courts have been playing a positive role in preventing various crimes, including eve-teasing. Similarly, the divisional administration is making sincere efforts to cooperate in the fight against terrorism, extremism, and the prosecution of war criminals and perpetrators of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. Furthermore, delivering e-services to the people through the digitization program is one of the priority initiatives.
Rangpur Division has an area of 16,185.01 square kilometers and a population of approximately 15,787,757. It comprises 33 parliamentary constituencies, 58 upazilas, and 536 unions. The literacy rate in the division stands at 47.02%. For the past decade, the region, known for its vulnerability to monga (seasonal food insecurity), has been a focal point of discussions on poverty alleviation. However, through sincere efforts, the Rangpur Division administration is actively working to transform the region and improve its socio-economic conditions.
